Unit 3 Health and Wellness

Reading I - A Letter from a Patient Notes

  • a. What was the authors nightmare? The thing that kept the author up at night was having to take their nine-week-old child with a high fever for medical treatment.
  • b. What do you suppose is the primary aim of this letter? What is the purpose of this letter? Answer: The purpose of this letter is to provide an insight onto her experience that brought them to the hospital and the concerns towards how some members ofstaff behaved or communicated during their baby stayed in there.
  • c.What did the author consider to be the primary shortcoming of hospital personnel? What does the author view as the major flaw of the hospital staff? Answer: In author writes that perhaps -- for all their skills and good intent -- they had lost sight of what this sick baby really needed.
  • d. Did the nurses really say 'she's not your priority' Why did the author think so? So, no the nurses did not outright say 'your daughter is not a priority'. In fact, the author said that their baby was not a priority for them because they kept saying how busy they were today — which made the author worry about whether or not their baby was being cared for.
  • e. The expectation of patients and the families from the health workers ? Answer: People expect health workers to emphasize that they care for them and their families first and foremost, providing the best medical service possible to patients. When they are in the hospital, they want to feel heard and respected.
  • f. What were two questions/concerns that they kept asking author in the hospital? Was your baby premature and did you have a normal delivery at the time of their stay at the hospital? are the questions author was asked frequently.
  • g. Why did the author of the book write that health workers made a gender error about their daughter Answer: The health workers made a big assumption about the author's daughter based on her gender as they called the baby male, despite no clear sign of gender. The author regretted that perhaps if the staff had given more attention to the baby's papers this could have been averted.
  • h. How is the career of health workers perceived by the author? Response: The author said that people look at the career of health workers as just a profession that provides medicinal therapy to sick individuals to let them heal. Yet, says the author, how health workers treat each other affects patients' experience of being in hospital.

D. If you become a health worker in the future, what would be your priority? How would you treat your patients and their families?

If I ever become a health worker, kindness and compassion towards every patient would be my priority. I would try to listen to them, exhibit empathy and take care of them like people. I would communicate with family members so deemed sensitive but transparent. I would practice evidence-based medicine and use data-informed practices. I just would not forego the human touch with patients: assessing their mental health, feelings and thoughts, not just physical complaints. Sometimes, just a warm bedside manner can be healing by itself. As a health worker, I would see each patient as I want someone to treat my beloved one — kindness, competence and whole person care.

E. Draft a short speech entitled, 'Importance of Exercise for Healthy Life'.

Good morning everyone. Today I want to discuss how exercise is an important aspects of living a healthy and happy life.

Exercise is any movement that helps convert your body to be physically fit and healthy. It includes walking, jogging, swimming, cycling and sports of all sorts but even with chores around the house. We all know that exercise is essential for both our physical and mental health.

Number one, exercise is great for controlling weight. Working out causes your body to consume calories and unused existing fat on the human frame. It assists in having a good weight and also minimizes the chances of any obesity.

In addition, regular exercise improves heart health. Helps control blood pressure, lowers cholesterol and triglycerides, and reduces the risk of heart disease and stroke.

Strengthening of bones and muscles is another benefit of Exercise. Additionally, it helps with bone density and reduces the risk for osteoporosis.

Exercise not only helps with physical health, too; it improves mental well-being. It helps alleviate stress and anxiety, increases the level of feel-good hormones such as endorphins in your blood which elevate our mood, fighting off depression. It also enhances cognitive function and suppresses age-related decline.

Essentially, exercise is medicinal for the body and as well your state of mind. It encourages complete fitness, well being and health. Doing half an hour of moderate activity a day can greatly reduce the chances of a host of chronic diseases. So make it a point to exercise every day in order to keep your body fit and live a longer, healthier and happier life.

In closing, I recommend that everyone take some sort of exercise you enjoy and do it daily. It is literally a matter of our health and wellbeing. Thank you.
