Reading - II 

Climbing Poem 

Summary

Climbing is a really brief poem about persistence in things that we know not of. It follows a narrator attempting to scale an apple tree to see the town across the way, struggling desperately to reach the top. Nevertheless, the speaker is resolved to ascend the tree and get what they want.

Including the entire 8-line poem itself. It describes the person who has tried, and failed multiple times to climb the tree — but will not give up (yet).

The recurrence of "I have climbed the apple tree" and "Yet I still climb the apple tree" in spite of several failures demonstrates a determination on the part of speaker not to surrender which feels quite human. Reaching for the branch "up to the shining town" is the speaker's destination and dream, motivating them to keep striving.

Ultimately, the brief but impactful poem shows how goals can be achieved — if one is resolute enough so as not to take No for an answer — regardless of needing repeated attempts before succeeding. Climbing an apple tree becomes a metaphor for the struggles we encounter and conquer as humans with sheer doggedness and determination.

Thus, the literal image of climbing an apple tree represents a deep message in Amy Lowell's "Climbing" about how persistence and determination matter when facing obstacles physical or not.
